How to Offer Next-Generation Payment Experiences
Ingenico has launched its Next-Gen AXIUM Android payment terminals, and payment experiences will never be the same. Merchants, acquirers, and our payment service provider (PSP) partners will see Ingenico’s strong commitment to quality and security reflected in this new line of countertop, portable, and self-service devices. But you’ll also see that something has changed in their DNA that elevates user experiences to a level the industry has never seen before.
Ingenico took on the challenge of reimagining the payment experience for consumers and the merchants assisting them at checkout. Our designers took inspiration from the ease of using popular consumer devices and brought those features and workflows to the checkout in a physical store. With Next-Gen AXIUM Android payment terminals, transactions are intuitive, quick, and efficient.
The Elements of Next-Gen AXIUM Android Payment Terminals’ Design
Our design team considered a wide range of options to enhance payment terminals’ user interface and user experience, from device features to software screens, including:
Lighting
Our Next-Gen AXIUM Android payment terminals use light guides to communicate with consumers and merchants as they interact with the device. Lights are a powerful way to provide feedback, with red indicating a problem and green assuring users that the transaction is approved. Lighting eliminates the guesswork for consumers, showing them next steps or warning them of missteps. Lighting also alerts store employees if the data a customer entered is incorrect or, potentially, fraudulent, so they can intervene immediately.
Haptics
Our Next-Gen AXIUM Android terminals also use touch sensations to guide users. Ingenico worked closely with accessibility experts to add sensory cues that help people with visual impairments to use payment devices and protect their PINs. The result is a system that leverages touch to guide experiences and that’s user-friendly for all consumers.
AI-Readiness
Our Next-Gen AXIUM devices use artificial intelligence, applied in practical ways to enhance payment transactions. For example, our payment terminals can intelligently detect if someone is looking over a customer’s shoulder when it’s time to enter a PIN. The system will shut down until the customer can enter the PIN privately. This feature protects consumer accounts in addition to protecting merchants from fraud in future transactions. Our AI-ready terminals also give merchants the freedom to add additional intelligent features as they become available in the payments space.
Screen Design
We researched merchant pain points and found that employees, particularly new hires, struggled with functions they didn’t use as often, such as making refunds. Our design team created a layered user interface that allows employees to access all functions from one screen. The first layer lists all payment applications, and then, within those menus, employees can choose the function they need, like payment or refund. We’ve found that new employees can complete training and work accurately on their own after only a single hour.
Benefits of Next-Gen AXIUM Technology for Ingenico Partners
While optimizing payment experiences for consumers and merchants was a primary objective, Ingenico also considered how to benefit its partners, including acquiring banks, payment processors, and PSPs. We worked with our partners to create terminals that allow them to deliver the highest value to their merchants today while continually anticipating future trends and emerging technology that will allow them to evolve with the industry. Our Next-Gen AXIUM design gives our partners the freedom to innovate, differentiate their offerings, and win more business now and in the future.
How Cross-Functional Collaboration Made Next-Gen AXIUM Design Possible
Achieving a truly ground-breaking terminal design that elevates user experiences required a different approach to design. We didn’t silo the process. We allowed our entire team to participate. As a global leader in payment technology, we took the best ideas from our teams across the world, from Europe to North America and Asia Pacific. We also collaborated cross-functionally so that all the components of our Next-Gen AXIUM Android payment terminals, including hardware, software, UI/UX, work together. For example, UI/UX designers worked with product designers to perfect screens, using the right size, aspect ratio, and form factor that optimize user experiences.
We also worked cooperatively with the research and development, sales, marketing, and industrialization teams to ensure the highest product quality.
